  • Cancer and other long-term conditions evidence review

Many people with cancer also live with one or more other long-term health conditions. At Macmillan, we know this can make life more challenging, and we’re committed to improving the support available. That’s why this area is a key focus in our strategy.

To inform our work, we partnered with The Strategy Unit, a specialist NHS-based research consultancy, to review the evidence. The review explores how the combined impact of having cancer alongside other conditions affects diagnosis, treatment and care, and the underlying drivers of differences in cancer experiences for this group of people.

  • Analysis of Macmillan’s electronic Holistic Needs Assessment (eHNA) data

Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs) enable health and care teams to deliver tailored care and support to people with cancer, addressing their individual concerns through dedicated conversations and care planning. HNAs can be carried out at different times throughout the cancer care pathway and by various types of organisations in addition to the NHS, including social care providers, community organisations and charities.

Macmillan provides an electronic HNA (eHNA) platform that is used by many health and care organisations across the UK. Every HNA and care plan recorded on the Macmillan eHNA platform contributes to a detailed UK-wide dataset that documents how personalised care is delivered for people with cancer and how people’s concerns are being addressed by their care team.

We have published a report that describes the people who receive their HNA and care planning via the Macmillan eHNA platform, and the health and care organisations involved. The report includes analysis of the process for setting up eHNAs, the concerns submitted by people with cancer, and how these concerns are addressed. It also summarises the data governance and privacy protections that safeguard people’s personal information.

This report builds on previous findings published in a conference poster showing that significantly more HNAs are set up at the point of initial diagnosis than at any other stage in the cancer care pathway. However, high levels of concerns are also reported when eHNAs are completed at other stages, demonstrating the importance of embedding HNAs and care planning throughout the cancer care pathway.
