RCAS is here to help people affected with cancer by providing one to one advocacy support enabling them to live with and beyond their cancer. This is a volunteer led service which is free, impartial, independent, confidential and open to anyone affected by cancer in Rotherham. RCAS is open to all tumour sites where the cancer nurses at Rotherham Hospital can refer patients and is open to self referral. The service is provided by telephone or video calls only and is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. An advocate can act on your behalf with your consent by making appropriate referrals and by contacting relevant services to ensure you are receiving what you are entitled to. The service also makes sure that your voice is being heard by attending meetings alongside you. Being diagnosed with cancer is a shock and we understand that can leave you feeling overwhelmed, worried about what happens next or thinking about the impact on your life. Having someone to talk to, who can provide the right information and support at a time when they need it, can make a huge difference. An Advocate can help by - Listening and giving you time to talk about your worries and concerns, Supporting you to find and access the services or information you need Empowering you to make your own decisions. We can also accompany you to meetings and appointments. Once you are assigned an Advocate, you will stay with them to ensure you have a friendly and familiar voice each time.
