The Dumfries & Galloway Macmillan Improving the Cancer Journey aims to transform the lives of p•eople affected by cancer by providing tailored practical and personal support, shaped around their individual needs. The new service will ensure cancer patients in Dumfries & Galloway are offered emotional, practical and financial support by making just one phone call. Every newly diagnosed cancer patient in Dumfries & Galloway will be contacted by the ICJ service offering a session with a dedicated one-to-one support worker. The worker will then help the patient access a wide range of support, from benefits advice and emotional support to help at home or with other practical needs. Improving the Cancer Journey will: Help people get the information and support they need, when they need it. Support people to access financial information and the benefits that they may be entitled to by referring and signposting to financial support services. Support people to address social and mental health needs by sign posting to community organisations with the aim or reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Develop support solutions beyond clinical treatment to ensure health and wellbeing continues beyond acute care. Build on existing links in local communities and making best use of available resources and partnerships Encourage self-directed support and self-management across all parts of people’s lives. Reduce inequalities in relation to accessing support services. Empower people to engage in self-management, rehabilitation, cultural and leisure activities.

Dumfries and Galloway ICJ is available to support anyone who is newly diagnosed with cancer.
