The journey so far

The changing picture of cancer care

Cancer care is becoming an increasingly complex picture. Over 3 million people are already living with cancer in the UK and this number continues to rise, while three in four of these people are living with additional health conditions on top of their diagnosis - such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis. As an organisation we need to evolve to be able to meet the changing needs of people with cancer, especially those who need us most.

We asked you to share your views 

Over the past 12 months we’ve spoken to a broad range of people with lived experience of cancer, colleagues, volunteers, healthcare professionals and partners. We’ve been gathering and reviewing insight from inside and outside of Macmillan to help us decide how we can have the greatest impact for people living with cancer, both now and in the future.

Where we are now

Your feedback has also given us four big questions we need to answer to help decide where Macmillan should focus in the future to make the biggest difference to people with cancer:

  • How can we be more active in trying to change and improve the healthcare system in which people with cancer receive care?
  • How can we work better and more closely with communities, particularly marginalised communities who tend to experience the most severe forms of inequalities in healthcare?
  • Could we achieve more for people with cancer by being more focused?
  • How can we be a louder advocate for and with people with cancer?

What happens next?

We’ve been working with the people and communities we’re here to serve to ensure we make the right decisions. We are now finalising our new organisational strategy, which will determine how we will focus our efforts to help ensure everyone in the UK receives the best support there is. We will share more information with you as soon as we can.
