Y Bwthyn NGS Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Unit
The Y Bwthyn NGS Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Unit is at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital near Llantrisant. Thanks to a generous donation of £2.5 million from the National Garden Scheme, we opened the centre in September 2019.
The state-of-the-art unit provides a warm and welcoming space for people with cancer and other conditions. We support people who need palliative and end of life care.
Architects who specialise in creating comforting healthcare environments designed the space. The eight bed unit has a theme of bringing the outdoors in. It features stunning artwork that creates a calming feel.As well as a light and airy day room, key services at the unit include:
- Specialist inpatient care: we have eight inpatient beds to support people at the end of life. Each bedroom is set up so that a patient's bed can be taken outside onto a screened terrace. This allows people to go outdoors in privacy.
- Specialist outpatient care: consultants lead weekly specialist palliative care outpatient clinics at the unit. The clinics support patients with pain management. We also support outpatients with a range of complementary therapy treatments.
- Specialist palliative day care service: we provide a weekly, clinically-led, multi-disciplinary specialist day care service. The service can support up to 12 patients each day. We provide safe and appropriate care for people with palliative care needs. The service also provides vital respite for carers and loved ones.
