About the event
You'll embark on your journey in Abisko, home to one of Sweden's oldest National Parks and a prime location for witnessing the Northern Lights.
Covering approximately 14 kilometres daily, you'll trek diverse terrains of:
- glaciers
- birch woodlands
- powerful rivers
- and Sweden's highest mountains.
You'll hike alongside Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise, and track the park's incredible wildlife.
At night, you'll spend your time in remote Artic mountain huts where you can rejuvenate in traditional Swedish saunas after days of exploring. This journey offers an authentic Artic explorer experience, where you'll embrace back-to-basics living by:
- carrying your own gear
- chopping wood
- lighting fire stoves
- cooking meals
- fetching water
- and leaving only snowshoe prints in the untouched snow.

Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Abisko
Fly from the UK to Kiruna and transfer to Abisko National Park. Meet the team for a trek briefing and enjoy dinner featuring Swedish cuisine. Overnight lodging in a 4-bed hostel at Abisko Mountain Station.

Day 2: Abisko Snowshoe
Snowshoe fitting and warm-up trek through Abisko National Park. Visit a reconstructed Sámi village. After lunch, transfer by snowmobile to Lake Alesjaure - 35km (2 hours). Stay overnight in mountain huts with saunas available.

Day 3: Lake Alesjaure to Tjakja Mountain Hut
Trek along the frozen Alesätno River, gaining 200m in ascent. Stay overnight in mountain huts, going back-to-basics by fetching water, chopping wood, and making dinner.

Day 4: Tjakja Mountain Hut to Sälka Hut
Snowshoe to Tjäktjapass (1140m) for panoramic views. Descend to Sälka. Stay overnight in mountain huts access to saunas.

Day 5: Sälka Hut to Singi Hut
Hike through the beautiful Tjäktjavagge valley, surrounded by glaciers and peaks. Stay overnight in mountain huts.

Day 6: Singi Hut to Kebnekaise
Hike to Kebnekaise Mountain Station, passing through Laddjuvagge with stunning scenery. Enjoy the saunas and celebrate with a well-deserved restaurant meal in the evening.

Day 7: Return to Kiruna Aiport
After a delicious swedish breakfast in Kebnekaise, you’ll transfer by snowmobile through the frozen valley of Laddjuvagge to Nikkaluokta, then by vehicle to Kiruna Airport.

Event Accessibility
The Kings Trail Arctic Snowshoe Expedition is a difficult challenge on varied terrain. You will need to carry your own kit and equipment, and it’s recommended that you have previous experience of long treks in varied and irregular terrain carrying a 45 litre day-pack. You do not need previous snowshoe trekking experience as training will be provided, however it is beneficial that you are a confident walker with a good level of fitness to manage the sections of ascent and long duration of the trek.
