What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a Government scheme that enables charities to reclaim the Income and/or Capital Gains Tax that supporters have already paid. To allow us to claim this back, donors must be a UK taxpayer and have paid sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the amount of all Gift Aid donations made for that tax year.

Donors who have not paid enough tax to cover the amount of Gift Aid claimed from their donation are responsible to pay and difference. Gift Aid is claimed at 25p for every £1 donated.

Gift Aid does not apply to non-UK taxpayers, or Isle of Man and Channel Island residents.

Can Gift Aid be claimed on all money I raise?

Gift Aid can only be claimed on gifts of money from individuals where no reward is received in return for making a donation. For example, it can’t be claimed on money given for things like raffles, where there’s a prize.

Gift Aid can't be claimed on the following types of fundraising:

  • Sales of cakes or other items (i.e. where you have set a fixed price per item)
  • Raffle or lottery tickets
  • Admission fees.

Please DO NOT add these donations to the Gift Aid form.

If the donation amounts for the whole form are all the same (e.g. £1.50) they may be considered payments for goods received or competition entries and therefore not eligible.

The Gift Aid form is for individual donations only so please DO NOT record the total amount you have raised from your event on the form.

For example, if you raise an amazing £100 at your event, you can’t send in a form with your name and £100 in the amount donated box. Unfortunately any errors may invalidate the form.

However, there is no upper or lower limit to Gift Aid. We can reclaim the tax on any amount, so you and your guests can fill in the Gift Aid form for any individual donation made, large or small.

What details do I need to fill in?

To help Macmillan claim Gift Aid we need the following information for each person:

  • Title
  • Full name
  • House name or number of your home address
  • Postcode
  • Date donated
  • Donation amount
  • The Gift Aid box must be ticked

Please note:

  • We can only claim if all of the boxes on each row are completed in full, and the Gift Aid tick box has been ticked.
  • It must be a home address as Gift Aid cannot be claimed if you use a work address.
  • Please ask those filling in the form to write clearly, so we can be sure to be able to process their Gift Aid.
  • Please ensure your donors do not use ditto marks ("") to save time.
  • Please do not add donations made via JustGiving to this donation form.

Do I have to use the Gift Aid form you've provided?

Yes. The Gift Aid form is a legal document and must include certain information to be valid. Unfortunately, other versions of the Gift Aid form cannot be accepted.

Guests who have made donations via your fundraising page or QR code should not add their details to the Gift Aid Form as they will have been asked if they would like to Gift Aid their donation when they made their online donation.

Once the sheet is filled in, return it using the freepost envelope in your pack, or to:

Can I save time and fill in the form in for my guests?

No. Please do not fill in donation details on behalf of your guests. For legal reasons, the Gift Aid declaration needs to be in the handwriting of the person ticking the box.

For the same reason all details need to be handwritten and not typed. Please ensure your donors do not use ditto marks ("") to save time.
